Zambia – Walking Safari 12 Days

Day 1 Departure from Sweden

Upon arrival in Lusaka, you will be met by our local representative and receive assistance for further flights to South Luangwa National Park. Upon arrival at Mfuwe International Airport you will be met by your guide from Robin Pope Safaris. The journey to Nkwali Camp takes about an hour and goes through colorful scenery with villages, agriculture and bush. Nkwali Camp overlooks the Luangwa River. The camp is located on Robin’s private land overlooking South Luangwa National Park. Nkwali is an ideal starting point for your safari. There are six rooms, all with a view of the river and a private shower / toilet. Depending on your arrival time, you are invited to lunch and relax with a view of the lagoon behind Nkwali or afternoon tea before your evening game drive.

Day 3 Nkwali

After dawn, breakfast is served around the campfire. The morning hike or game drive enters the park by boat from the camp or the nearby barge. You have the opportunity to see herds of elephants and endemic species of giraffe, Thornicroft Giraffe. In the morning, take a break for tea, coffee and cake overlooking the lagoon or Luangwa River. You return to camp in time for lunch. After lunch you can relax by the pool or take a siesta. Tea is served before you go on an afternoon safari. You return to the camp after sunset to also have the opportunity to see nocturnal animals.

Day 4 Mobile Camping

After an early breakfast, head north to embark on the hike that has become known as South Luangwa’s best wilderness experience. The drive to the Mupamadzi River is 90 km long along small bush roads, through remote parts of the park. You arrive at the camp in time for lunch. The camp is already set up on arrival with well-equipped “walk-in” tents. You will find the shower under a tree and the toilet is in a private tent in a separate part of the camp. Enjoy a relaxing siesta after lunch before it’s time for an afternoon hike in the surroundings of the camp. You return in time for sundowners and dinner outdoors under the stars.

Day 5 Mobile Camping

Ascension at sunrise for your morning hike. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and environments varied. Here the wildlife is still shy and above the human. During the day you will learn about everything from ants to buffaloes, birds’ nests and tracking lions. The mobile camp is packed up and moved to camp two in the morning. Everything is ready in time for lunch when you arrive. The rest of the day is spent with lunch, siesta and afternoon hiking.

You continue to explore the area around camp two on foot.

Day 7 Mobile Camping

The camp is moved again to camp 3 during the morning while you continue your hike further down the river. The clear waters of the Mupamadzi River are a major tributary to the Luangwa. All hikes are led by an experienced naturalist guide and accompanied by an armed ranger.

You continue to explore the area around camp three on foot.

Day 9 Tena Tena

After an early breakfast, transfer to Luangwa Rivers opposite Tena Tena. This is a 4-5 hour drive. Staff from Tena Tena will meet and take you by boat across the river, followed by a 20-minute drive to Tena Tena Camp. This remote and small camp is located deep inside the national park with a stunning sweeping view of the Luangwa River. The tents are in the shade of the mahogany trees. From the food tent and bar you can see elephants, hippos and antelopes roaming along the river bank. Tena has five large tents with porches and outdoor bathrooms overlooking a watering hole. Most meals are taken in the shade of a huge mahogany tree in the middle of the camp. On arrival you will be shown to your tent followed by lunch before your well deserved siesta. The day ends with an afternoon and evening game drive.

Day 10 Tena Tena

Today there is the opportunity to visit the impressive Buca Buca lagoon. Here, an entire morning can be spent quietly while the game passes in search of pasture and drink. The combination of the remote location and the small camp means that you have everything to yourself. If you prefer, you can explore the Nsefu area of ​​the national park, or take a picnic and make a full day trip to the salt flats with unique habitats and an exceptional day safari. It is also possible to visit the village of Kawaza for one to meet the locals and experience everyday life in a village that has barely been influenced by the outside world. Day 11 Mfuwe – Lusaka

Depending on your flight time, you will be driven to Mfuwe Airport which is about 1.5 hours drive from Tena Tena. If time allows, you also do one last game drive. Upon arrival in Lusaka, you will be met for a transfer to your centrally located hotel. The rest of the day on your own.

Day 12 Return home

Early transfer to the airport to start the journey again to Europe. You are back in Sweden late in the evening.
